Royal Challengers Bangalore retained the Indian Captain Virat Kohli and paying him ₹17 crores. This is the highest paid salary to any player in the IPL history. However, RCB always has the star players in their side but they never succeeded to win the IPL tournament. Although, they have been runner-up in IPL 2009, 2011 and 2016 but could not win the title ever.
This year Royal Challengers Bangalore is looking very strong as they maintained balance in both the bowling and batting departments. In previous IPL tournaments, RBC’s batting line-up performed well. Even only captain Virat Kohli himself scored 973 runs in the IPL 2016 but they used to lack in the bowling department always. This time they tried to fix this problem or we can say they have even done better as they are looking the most dangerous bowling attack of the IPL 2018.
Let’s have a look at the Royal Challengers Bangalore side and try to analyse their strengths, weaknesses and player selection.
The Retained Players:
As every team was allowed to retain a maximum of their three existing players to the side before the auction. So Royal Challengers Bangalore retained their two most experienced and valuable players Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers along with young Sarfaraz Khan.
As Royal Challengers Bangalore need Virat as their captain and who would not want Indian captain to lead their side in an Indian league. Kohli and de Villiers are the two most destructive, consistent and reliable batsmen in modern world cricket. They both can take the game away from the opposition, single-handedly.
Surprisingly Royal Challengers Bangalore retained young Indian Players Sarfaraz Khan to the side. He is a young batsman and used to play for Uttar Pradesh in Ranji Trophy.
RTM Card Use:
Royal Challengers Bangalore used their first RTM card to retain the Indian wrist spinner, Yajuvendra Chahal. Chahal has been a wonderful performer for RCB in the IPL. Nowadays he is also one of the most successful bowlers of Indian Cricket team in limited overs cricket. So this is a very wise decision by RCB.
RCB used their second RTM card for retaining Pawan Negi. Pawan is a left arm orthodox bowler, but he is not that successful in his IPL career. Royal Challengers Bangalore criticized by their fans and sports critics for retaining Pawan to the side using valuable RTM card.
The smart Buy:
Royal Challengers Bangalore did a great job buying the two Kiwi players to their side. Opening batsman Brendon McCullum and all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme. McCullum is one of the all-time most successful T20 cricketers in world cricket. However, He is now retired from international cricket, but this destructive top order batsman still has the capability to lead the match alone. He is the best option to open the inning in IPL with captain Kohli in place of KL Rahul.
Colin de Grandhomme is one of the best finishers in the world cricket nowadays. RCB mostly depends upon their top order batsmen to score runs, but his presence is definitely going to solve the weak middle order problem for the team. He can also be useful in the batting order.
Chris Woakes is a super buy from RCB. This English all-rounder with his batting and bowling skills will be able to lead from the front alone. He is the most valuable buy from RCB this year.
Royal Challengers Bangalore’s strength used to depend mostly on their batsmen. However, this time they managed to balance all the departments, but still the key of the line-up is their batting. Along with world’s two best batsmen Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, now RCB also has the most destructive opening batsman Brendon McCullum.
In the middle order, RCB succeeded to maintain balance as they now have Chris Woakes, Colin de Grandhomme and Nathan Coulter-Nile. These three will be very handy at the middle order.
Royal Challengers Bangalore finally bought the right bowlers this year. They bought good Indian bowlers such as Umesh Yadav, Yajuvendra Chahal, Pawan Negi along with overseas bowling stars like Chris Waokes, Tim Southee and Colin de Grandhomme. RCB’s bowling is looking the most strong bowling attack of the IPL 2018.
Having too many star players can cause difficulties sometimes and this has been the biggest problem with RCB. They always had the star players but could not manage to use them properly. This time also they bought so many international star players, but it would be very difficult for the captain to pic final playing 11 among them.
As the other successful IPL Franchise such as Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings retained their core players and build the team around them again, but Royal Challengers Bangalore failed to do that. This will cause problems for RCB in building-up the team bonds again between new players.
