Delhi Daredevils always had big names on their side but always failed to win the IPL title. According to the last 10 years IPL records, Delhi Daredevils is the most disappointing team of the tournament so far. Delhi Daredevils played semifinals in the year 2008, 2009 and 2012 but couldn’t make to the finals ever.
Delhi Daredevils team is looking one of the most strong teams in this IPL 2018 as they bought 2 IPL title-winning captain Gautam Gambhir along with many good international players like Glen Maxwell, Chris Morris and Jason Roy etc.
Delhi Daredevils are the only team in the IPL history who have played all 10 seasons of the tournament but never qualified for the finals. After retaining the young players of India, their strategy towards the IPL tournament looks different this time. So let’s check their squad for this season of IPL and try to analyse their strengths and limitations.
The Retained Players:
As every franchise team of the IPL was allowed to retain its maximum three existing players in the team. Delhi Daredevils retained the young Indian domestic talent instead of big names in world cricket. They retained Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant. Both are young, aggressive and talented batsmen and both have proved themselves in the previous season of the IPL.
Along with young India talent, Delhi Daredevils also retained one of the best All-rounders in modern world cricket Chris Morris. Morris is a destructive bowler and aggressive finisher in limited overs cricket. He also has been very successful in IPL so far and had a great IPL season last year with bat and ball.
RTM Card Use:
After retaining three players Delhi Daredevils could only use two RTM card in the auction. So DD used their first RTM card for Indian Pacer Mohammad Shami. Shami has been a regular test bowler for India for the last couple of years and he will definitely be very useful in domestic conditions to lead the bowling attack.
The other RTM card Delhi Daredevils used for Kagiso Rabada. DD bought Rabada back and strengthen their bowling unit. The South African pacer is now a regular member of his country’s team and proved himself an asset to the team. DD should also be hoping for the same from him in this IPL season.
The Smart Buys:
Delhi Daredevils has bought Gautam Gambhir back. Gautam is two IPL title winner captain for KKR and now his leadership will definitely solve half of Delhi’s problems. The veteran player is not only a good leader but also a great batsman and has a superb IPL record. This buy is really a golden catch from Delhi Daredevils and this can also change their fortune in IPL 2018.
Another smart buy from Delhi Daredevils is destructive Australian batsman Glen Maxwell. Maxwell is one of the best batsmen in T20 cricket nowadays. He can lead the team to the victory single-handedly. He will definitely be an asset to the DD for sure.
Delhi Daredevils have arranged one of the best batting line-ups of the tournament as they have Gautam Gambhir, Glen Maxwell, Jason Roy along with young Indian talents such as Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and U-19 World Cup winning captain Prithvi Shaw. With the addition of finishers like Denial Christian and Chris Morris in the team, the squad looks more effective in the batting department.
DD’s biggest problem has been their captaincy, but due to Gautam Gambhir’s presence, this problem is now solved. They also have a great combination of all-rounders in their side and a solid bowling unit led by Mohammad Shami and Crish Morris.
The bowling department of Delhi Daredevils is a little bit subject to concern as their main bowlers are facing some serious issues this time. Chris Morris has been out of form for a long while, Mohammad Shami is in some controversies nowadays and Kagiso Rabada doesn’t have much experience of the IPL.
DD also has the problem of quality bench strength as they have limited options as replacement of their star players. Since IPL is a long tournament and injuries and adverse situations during a single season of IPL cannot be denied. In this situation, a strong bench strength has its own advantage.
