According to the Daily Telegraph, Arsenal are seriously considering the prospect of signing Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini this summer. The Belgian has been a peripheral figure ever since moving to Old Trafford, and it now seems like his topsy-turvy marriage with the Manchester outfit is expected to end shortly.

The Belgian appears to be disgruntled with the lack of playing time at the club and the constant jeering of the home fans. He has also reportedly turned down two contract extensions, with clubs like AC Milan showing an avid interest in his services.

He would be relieved to hear about Arsenal’s interest because he seems happy living in England and was having second thoughts over making a move abroad to play in a different league. The Gunners need a solid presence in the middle of the park and Fellaini could be the man to provide that for them.

It is also reported that newly appointed manager Unai Emery is a fan of the 30-year-old and was keen on bringing him to Paris St. Germain during his time spent at the French club. Arsenal’s head of recruitment Sven Mislintat also appears to share Emery’s thoughts on the player and will do all he can to pursue him to make a move to the Emirates on a free transfer.

This signing, if it goes through, will be the start of a new trend at Arsenal Football Club. Under Wenger, the club preferred to sign younger players that could be developed into stars at the club and that had a higher resale value.

However, since the appointment of Mislintat, a number of players have joined and are rumoured to sign for the club are in their late twenties and are unlikely to fetch a considerable sum if they are put up on the market a few years down the line.

The Arsenal fans could be skeptical about this signing and for good reason as Fellaini has made only five league starts this season and has showcased doubts about distribution and his tackling ability. He is also prone to the occasional lapses in concentration, something that has been common for a number of Arsenal players over the past season.
