According to reports in Germany, Chelsea misfit Alvaro Morata has emerged as a shock transfer target for Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund. The Yellow and Blacks finished fourth in the league this past season, meaning they will participate in next year’s UEFA Champions League. They’re likely to build a new team next season under a new manager after they’ve had a topsy-turvy 2017/18 campaign in both the league and in Europe.
Chelsea’s shambolic league displays this past term will see them settle for Europa League football and everything is certainly not right behind the doors at the club. Manager Antonio Conte for one is uncertain himself whether or not he will guide the Blues onto the pitch for next season’s opener in mid August, and there’s a similar feeling among the fans and the players alike.
While the manager has taken most of the blame for their performances this season, the players too know that they’ve not been up to the mark and it may be time for them to introspect and actually see what’s gone wrong. One player that certainly would be wondering where things suddenly went south is Alvaro Morata.
The Spaniard came to the Bridge on the back of a transfer failure. Chelsea initially thought they had Romelu Lukaku joining them until Manchester United played party poopers and stole the Belgian from under their noses.
Yet, Morata was first-choice since day one and seemed to hit the ground running. However, post a few minor injury setbacks, his performances took a massive dip and he failed to lead Chelsea’s line with aplomb.
Now, the Spaniard is a reported £70 million target for Dortmund and it is understood that Chelsea would be happy to part ways with the player. They have Michy Batshuayi on loan at the German club, and he could come in to lead the line next season provided Conte is given the axe this summer.
