Italian side AS Roma produced one of the biggest shocks in Champions League history after they overcome 4-1 first leg deficit to beat Spanish giants Barcelona at Stadio Olimpico.

Italians have become only the third side in Champions League history to overturn a 3+ goal deficit after the 1st leg in the knockout stages, interestingly it was Barcelona who did last year against Paris st Germain

On paper, it looked like a routine match for Barcelona, Messi and Company, especially after the first leg, to reach another UEFA Champions League semi-final.

Did anyone see this coming? Probably not, but Edin Dzeko’s away goal at camp nou in the first leg proved decisive. No one can argue that Roma didn’t deserve to beat Barcelona on the night. They were brilliant and deserved all the credit they get.

How did all go wrong for Barca?

1. Complacent
Manager Ernesto Valverde decided to implement defensive tactics from the start to defend first leg’s 4-1 lead.

2. Wrong Starting Line-up
Nelson Semedo was selected instead of Sergi Roberto, who was given the role to protect the back four. But the move didn’t work as Portuguese Righ back struggled heavily as former Manchester City defender Alexander Kolarov gave him a difficult all night. It was Nelson who was match winner Kostas Manolas for the 3rd goal.
3. Failed to Recognise the Danger
The manager even refused to change his tactics even after 2-0 and knowing that Roma were going for it. No disrespect to Andres Iniesta but veteran playmaker looked ineffective and exhausted in the second half still former Athletico Bilbao coach ignored the warning signs, eventually did make the change after Roma scored their 3rd goal and brought on Andre Gomes.

4. Best Attack and Best Defence did not turn up
Messi and Co were unbeaten in both La Liga and Champions League going into the 2nd leg. The reason was only one, Never Give up, Remember losing 2-0 against Athletic Madrid until 88th min and ended the match 2-2? But never in this match, we saw that attitude.

Disappointment

Lionel Messi must be annoyed to see Real Madrid and Ronaldo winning Three Champions League title in last Four Years. Everyone knows that Messi personally wanted to stop Real Madrid this season and bring back UEFA Champions League trophy to Camp Nou.
