According to reports in Spain, Premier League giants Liverpool have joined Napoli and Atletico Madrid in the race to sign FC Barcelona’s number two Jasper Cillessen – who has been playing second fiddle to Marc Andre ter Stegen at the Catalan outfit. It is understood that the Dutch international believes he has what it takes to be a number one at one of Europe’s top clubs.
It is understood that all three clubs have made initial enquiries to Barcelona about the keeper and they are expected to reply in the due course about his availability. Liverpool are building something concrete and unique under Jurgen Klopp and that factor may attract Cillessen to the club.
Their German manager has used both his keepers Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet this season, but doesn’t seem overly impressed with the both of them. In fact, it seems the latter has fallen out of favour at the club and could be on his way out in the summer.

He moved to Barcelona in 2016 hoping to displace ter Stegen and become the club’s undisputed number one, but unfortunately for him that has not happened. The German has been in prolific form domestically as well as in Europe, restricting Cillessen to very few minutes on the field of play.
Thus, Liverpool could be a good destination for the player. Karius may have earned Klopp’s trust for the time being, but the manager knows that he will have to find an upgrade quickly if they are to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
While some may argue that Cillessen does not necessarily prove to be an upgrade on Karius, given the situation regarding Mignolet’s uncertain future at Anfield, Klopp could be happy to offload the Belgian in order to make way for the FC Barcelona goalkeeper, and could thus commence negotiations for the player without any further ado.
