The Sri Lankan cricket team has had a major setback before the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. In fact, their star all-rounder and captain Angelo Mathews has decided not to bowl in the one-day series against Proteas. He has been suffering from a long time.
Significantly, Matthews was appointed as the captain of the ODI team in January this year but he had to be out of the team due to injury several times. Even before the ODI series against South Africa, he had to stay out of the team due to injury for some matches.
Let you know that Sri Lankan star player Mathews has taken 114 wickets in 196 ODI but this time he does not want to take the risk of bowling again against South Africa.
During all this, he said, “I will not bowl in this series. Hope to start bowling on the net and see how it feels.”
However, Mathews hopes the team will recover from the poor performance of 2017. The 31-year-old all-rounder said, “We would like to perform better in limited overs cricket. We have started very good with the Test series and would like to continue that goal in ODI.”
Apart from this, when asked about the six match ban on Opener Danushka Gunathilaka, he said, “It is extremely worrying but the team gives more priority to discipline.”
Danushka Gunathilaka’s issue:
Its noteworthy that recently Sri Lanka Cricket board has imposed a six-match ban on opener Gunathilaka for violating the Code of Conduct. For this reason, he will not be able to play in the five-match ODI series. He will be out of the only T20 international match against South Africa as well.
