Kings XI Punjab, the franchise based on Mohali could not have performed well in any IPL tournaments so far. However, in the very first season of Indian Premier League, they were the semifinalist of the tournament and they are also the runner-up of IPL 2014. but other than that they could not do anything better. The franchises have been in news regarding their star player Yuvraj Singh. Once he used to be the Icon Player of the Kings XI Punjab franchise and now he is back in the team again.
Kings XI Punjab’s journey for last 10 years has not been appreciable as they have never been able to win an IPL title. But as every season is new, this season could bring happiness to their side as well. This time Punjab surprisingly only retained Axar Patel and didn’t use their RTM card for Glenn Maxwell. But they managed to form a new and stronger team this time. Let’s have a look at their strengths and weaknesses and try to analyse their squad.
The Retained Players:
As every franchise team of the IPL was allowed to retain its maximum three existing players in the team. But surprisingly KXIP only retained Axar Patel ruling all big match winners out including their ex-captain Glenn Maxwell.
Axar Patel is a good all-rounder and has been proving himself as a valuable member of Kings XI Punjab squad. As he can bat along with bowling so he will definitely be an asset to the team on the ground.
RTM Card Use:
Kings XI Punjab did not use their RTM Card for their valuable player and ex-captain Glenn Maxwell. But they used their RTM for Marcus Stoinis and David Miller. David Miller is a destructive batsman and a great player. He can lead the game single-handedly to a win. So this is a great RTM used by Kings XI Punjab.
Kings XI Punjab used their 2nd RTM for Marcus Stoinis. Marcus is a valuable all-rounder as he can bat as a finisher and can also be used as a pacer in the side.
The Smart Buys:
Kings XI Punjab bought KL Rahul and Aaron Finch in the auction at a very high bid of ₹ 11 cores and ₹ 6.2 crores respectively. The Australian opener is a great buy from Kings XI Punjab. He is one of the best opening batsmen in the limited over cricket. KL Rahul is the new star of Indian cricket team and with his tremendous form, he can be a valuable opener for Kings XI Punjab.
Yuvraj Singh This year returned to Kings XI Punjab franchise. However, he was bought at the base price of ₹ 2 crores, but he is one of the most dangerous and reliable players of Indian cricket. This grab by Kings XI Punjab is also a good deal.
Ravichandran Ashwin and Chris Gayle are also two big and main players those were bought by Kings XI Punjab in the auction. These both are the leader of their departments.
The main strength of Kings XI Punjab is their batting line-up as they have gathered KL Rahul, Aaron Finch, Manoj Tiwari, David Miller, Karun Nair along with Mayank Agarwal. Their batting is looking pretty much set and full of potential.
They also have the quality all-rounders led by one of the best all-rounders of IPL Yuvraj Singh. Marcus Stoinis and retained player Axar Patel are also the keys of their middle order and this is the main strength of the Kings XI Punjab.
Ravichandran Aswin is leading their bowling attack that is a plus point for Kings XI Punjab as they used to miss a quality bowler in their side for long.
As Kings XI Punjab bought many quality batsmen and all-rounders in their side along with Indian test star Ravichandran Ashwin, but they are still missing a quality genuine pace attack. Bowling department has been a big problem for Kings XI Punjab for so long. However, they bought Andrew Tye and Mohit Sharma but still this section weaker comparing to their batting department.
