IPL 2018 Current Team Roster Analysis: Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians have proved themselves a champion side in the Indian premier league. They are the defending champions of IPL title this year as well as the winner of three IPL tournaments (2013, 2015, 2017), which is more than any other franchise team of IPL. Mumbai always showed their class in the game of cricket when it comes to big stages.

The star players of Mumbai Indians squad used to play key roles in their victories and the combination of captain Rohit Sharma and coach Mahela Jayawardene has performed exceptionally well. Now the auctions for IPL 2018 have been completed and Mumbai also got a chance for grabbing new star players on the team like other franchise.

However, Mumbai loses Harbhajan Singh and Lasith Malinga for the 11th season of IPL. Both these players have been a key part of Mumbai’s squad for all ten seasons of the IPL. But instead of that Mumbai Indians bought many good players in the auction and made some good deals.

Here is the team analysis of Mumbai Indians’ new team for IPL 2018. Let’s see what Mumbai Bought to their side from the IPL auctions this year.

The Retained Players:

Every franchise team of the IPL was allowed to retain its maximum three existing players in the team. Mumbai Indians chose their captain Rohit Sharma, who led Mumbai to win the IPL thrice, along with one of the best all-rounders of India Hardik Pandya and the ICC World number one T20 bowler Jaspreet Bumrah.

All three of them are the permanent members of Indian Cricket Team, even of the playing eleven. So this was the very smart move from Mumbai to retain all three regular and performing domestic players in the team. These players are also the core of the team in batting, bowling and all-rounder departments.

RTM card use:

Mumbai Indians used their Right to Match card very wisely. They used first RTM card to retain the very reliable and valuable player of their squad Kieron Pollard and bought him at the high price of ₹ 5.4 crores. The second RTM card used by Mumbai for the new star of their team Krunal Pandya. Mumbai would not have been hoping for this high price bid on him of ₹ 8.8 crores, but after all, they used their RTM for him.

The Smart Buys:

Mumbai Indians picked Australian All-rounder Ben cutting (₹ 2.2 crores) and South African Batsman JP Duminy (₹ 1 crores) in the auction. Both the pickings are very clever by Mumbai because both are very good player of limited over cricket and for buying them Mumbai didn’t spend a lot of money. MI also bought the young and aggressive West Indies player Evin Lewis with a high bid of ₹ 3.8 crores. Mumbai also grabbed the destructive bowler of Australia Pat Cummins by offering a big amount of ₹ 5.4 crores and the IPL star Mustafizur Rahman by offering ₹ 2.2 crores.

MI invested in three very talented domestic players. They bought wicket-keeper batsmen Ishan Kishan (₹ 6.2 crores), middle-order batsman Suryakant Yadav (₹ 3.2 crores) and pacer Pradeep Sanghwan (₹ 1.5 crores). All these three players have performed exceptionally well in previous seasons of IPL.

As taking a look at the new squad of Mumbai Indians, the all-rounders will be the key for Mumbai in the upcoming IPL 2018. Having both the Pandya brothers, Keiron Pollard and Ben Cuttings long with domestic players like Akila Dhananjaya and Tajinder Dhillon, Mumbai Indians are looking most effective and strong among all the franchise teams in IPL this year.

Mumbai Indians used to play with two overseas fast bowlers along with Indian bowlers, they picked Mustafizur Rahman and Pat Cummins along with Jason Behrendorff (₹ 1.5 crores) in place of Malinga, Johnson and McLagan. So bowling department also looks solid for MI as Jaspreet Bumrah is going to lead the bowling.

However, MI let Josh Buttler and Landon Simons go as their top order batting option, But they picked the young hard hitter Evin Lewis instead of that. The team full of star batsmen like Rohit Sharma, JP Duminy, Suryakumar Yadav, Sourabh Tiwari and Ishan Kishan looks a strong in the batting department as well.

Approx in every season, Mumbai Indians always struggled with their opening combinations. This new line-up of Mumbai Indias also does not show a proper view of a particular regular opener in the squad. However, MI have the world’s best opening batsman in limited overs cricket as Rohit Sharma, but he always prefered to play as a middle order player in the IPL. It will be very interesting to see that how Mumbai Indians will manage in the opening department.

Mumbai has picked very good quality fast bowlers but the spin department is now looking a bit inexperienced this time as they don’t have any big international and experienced spinner in the team. However, MI signed Sri Lankan Akila Dhananjaya but he is an all-rounder basically and his place in the playing eleven is even not certain.
