Finally, FIA gave its explanation regarding the ban of Ferrari Winglet and how their liberal and feeble interpretation of the word mounting in the rule books of Formula 1 forced them to get banned just after one race.
In the Spanish Grand Prix Ferrari became the first team which introduced the such new design. The design is having the mirror attached to the cockpit protection device and then having a winglet over it for the protection.
Initially, it grabbed the attention of all the teams. The Technical director of Force India Andrew Green said that he initially thought that the design will not go to pass the design norms of Formula 1. But it got passed for the weekend.
But later on, FIA intervene in it and clarifies that Ferrari needs to change the design of the car if they want to race in the next event. The next event will going to be held in Monaco.
FIC Race Director on the Matter:
FIA race director, Charlie Whiting clarifies the reason of ban of Ferrari Winglet.
“ It’s a liberal interpretation of the word ‘mounting’ because that’s how they become legal,” he said.
“The interpretation hinges on whether we think that’s a mounting or not. We somehow think not,” he added.
“They think it contributes to the rigidity of the mirror. I doubt they would be there if there wasn’t a measurable aero advantage, but these days that doesn’t have to be big. Ferrari was able to run on the tracks in Spain because of the unforced breach of the rules by Ferrari which is not actually illegal.”
