According to reports in Spain (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has turned to Wolverhampton Wanderers star Ruben Neves to replace Ander Herrera in the summer. The highly-coveted Portuguese star has been pivotal in guiding Wolves to the Championship summit this year, and could be tempted to join forces with his countryman at Old Trafford.

Herrera could be on the move in the summer as he seems to have fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford, probably due to his lack of discipline. After being the Player of the Year for the club in 2016/17, he is now playing second-fiddle to academy graduate and uncapped international Scott McTominay.

The Spaniard believes that he still has a few seasons more to offer at the top of his game, but is aware that he might not get the chances at Manchester United. He has been linked with moves to AC Milan and Atletico Madrid, and could consider jumping ship if he’s offered regular minutes on the field of play.

To replace Herrera, Neves may be well suited to come in as he plays in a similar position as the Spaniard. He also is a younger alternative to the former Athletic Bilbao man as he is yet to celebrate his 21st birthday. He has a year’s experience in England under his belt at Wolves, and has already shown his worth at a relatively lesser team compared to the top sides in the continent.

Neves, despite being in the tender stages of his career, appears to have the maturity to play a top club. He was doing a decent job at Porto before joining Wolves, but left the Portuguese club after falling out with Nuno Espirito Santo. Surprisingly, he decided to continue his relationship with him as he followed Nuno to Wolves – where he is now a regular under his tutelage.

If the player is open to a move and the club are willing to let go of him, United are understood to be a club that Wolves could be looking to do business with, given the Portuguese connection involving the two clubs, the player and agent Jorge Mendes.
