Manchester United thrashed RB Leipzig at home in their UEFA Champions League tie last night. The Red Devils have dominated the match for the full 90 minutes which presented them a comfortable 5-0 win again the Bundesliga leaders.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said in his pre-match press conference that he does not want multiple changes to the starting XI. But giving a surprise to everyone he left Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford on the bench.
Ole starts with a 4-1-2-1-2 formation with a diamond in midfield consisting of Nemanja Matic, Fred, Pogba, and Donny Van De Beek. Martial and Greenwood were also back in the squad.
In the 21st minute, Mason Greenwood gave the lead to the home team. After conceding the German club was trying hard to get back the equalizer. But David De Gea and Manchester United defense were rock solid. In the second half, RB Leipzig was playing with a high defensive line and also committing more men in attack to put pressure on United.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer read the situation well and threw on Rashford, Fernandes, and Scott McTominay by replacing Greenwood, Van De Beek, and Matic within a difference of few minutes.
Rashford scored in 74th and 78th minutes by exploiting the void space behind the Leipzig defense. Then Anthony Martial scored his first goal of the season from the spot in the 87th minute. After that Marcus Rashford scored his 3rd goal in injury time to complete the hat-trick. Rashford became the second Manchester United player after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to score a hat-trick after coming on as a substitute.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was praising Manchester United’s number 10 after the match. He said, “Marcus Rashford came on and did well but the groundwork was there from the team, that’s what you want that from the subs. What a shift they put in.”
“Leipzig is a high press, the intensity, so we had to dig deep. We had to rest a few because the season is relentless, so we used the squad. This group is coming together. The more quality and spirit you have the more you get the performance.”- he added.
Donny Van De Beek has also started for Manchester United yesterday. Ole was happy with the Dutch midfielder. Donny Van De Beek has covered the second-highest distance yesterday after Fred. He was subbed off earlier though. “Donny is a fantastic boy. You see the work he puts down.”- Ole said.
The Man of the Match Marcus Rashford was delighted with his hat-trick and also the whole performance of the team.
“I think the manager wanted me to up the tempo.”- he said after the match.
“That for us means going forward. There were definitely spaces there. We got Bruno and Paul (Pogba) on the ball. We looked dangerous throughout and that we could score every time we went forward.”- Rashford added.
On the other hand, it was quite embarrassing for RB Leipzig. Julian Nagelsmann’s men were top of the Bundesliga table. It was also their first defeat of the season. It was quite disappointing for them with this result.
Julian Nagelsmann said, “It was a bit crazy because after they scored the first goal we did well. The final 20 minutes were very bad.”
It was the first win for Manchester United at Old Trafford this season. After a bad start in Premier League, United is finally getting their momentum back. They beat Paris Saint Germain and RB Leipzig is the first two games of the UEFA Champions League and now leading the group. They also kept a clean sheet against Chelsea in Premier League last weekend. Manchester United will face Arsenal on Sunday in Premier League and surely want to maintain its rhythm. The depth on the United bench will help them in it for sure.
