Chelsea and Manchester United in the hunt for Bayern Munich talisman Robert Lewandowski

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea and Manchester United are in the running to secure the services of Robert Lewandowski in the summer. The Bayern Munich superstar has been prolific for club and country for the past few seasons, and is one of the best out and out number nines in Europe today.

Despite him seeming to enjoy life at Allianz Arena, rumours linking him with an exit from the Bundesliga are not going away. It is reported that the player feels he has done it all in the German first division with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, and is contemplating over a probable switch to the Premier League in the future.

To date, the Pole has 171 goals in the Bundesliga and is showing no signs of slowing down. He has formed a nearly seamless understanding with the other attackers in the Bayern setup and has benefited by the team playing to his strengths.

However, he is aware that within a few years, he will not longer be the revered forward he is today, and for that reason in particular, he could look to try his luck out in another and more competitive league. The Premier League is as challenging as they come and has been a competition that Lewandowski has been close to playing in several times in the past.

In case he wants to turn it into a reality, Manchester United and Chelsea are waiting to snap up his services. The two clubs shelled out a considerable amount of money in the summer to signing Romelu Lukaku and Alvaro Morata respectively, but they’re once again being linked with a striker.

The United angle does make sense as Zlatan Ibrahimovic is leaving the club in the summer and Jose Mourinho would want to sign a quality striker to replace the Swede. It could also possibly see him move to a two striker system with Lewandowski playing alongside Romelu Lukaku.

However, for Chelsea it seems pretty baffling. The Blues signed Olivier Giroud in January on a permanent basis from Arsenal in January and have Michy Batshuayi out on loan at Borussia Dortmund – where he has put in a string of impressive performances. Thus, adding another striker to the mix would only disrupt the mood in the dressing room.

It is interesting to see how this transfer shapes up and which other clubs show an interest in the Poland international.
