According to Miguel Delaney of the Independent, Manchester United are looking to sign German midfielder Toni Kroos from Real Madrid in the summer. The 28-year-old has been the fulcrum of the La Liga club’s midfield since joining from Bayern Munich, and is undoubtedly one of their most important players.
A player of his calibre would walk into most if not every top European side’s playing eleven. Despite having a lot of experience under his belt, he still has a few years in his tank at the peak of his game, and could be a marquee signing for Manchester United this summer.
A lot has been spoken about Paul Pogba and how manager Jose Mourinho is failing to get the best out of him by playing him in a two man midfield. The Frenchman is tasked with a lot of defensive and positional responsibilities playing in a 4-2-3-1 and he isn’t given the freedom he was was when he played on the left side of a trio in a 4-3-3 at Juventus.
The 24-year-old is at his best when the shackles are taken off him and he is allowed to freely express himself. United’s last summer signing Nemanja Matic is positionally sound and with Kroos tucked him alongside him anchoring the midfield, Pogba could wreak havoc in the attacking third.
Currently Mourinho has been using Pogba as a box to box midfielder, but his game is more suited to that of an advanced playmaker where he links the midfield to the attack and often gets into goal-scoring positions for himself. Playing him in that role could also see Lukaku strive while Alexis Sanchez could play a more disciplined role down United’s left flank.
However, whether or not Real Madrid will be willing to let go of Kroos remains to be seen. As mentioned earlier, the German is one of their most important players and is a major reason why the managed to win the Champions League for two years in a row. Manager Zinedine Zidane doesn’t have a similar player too bank on in his first team or academy that’ll successfully anchor Madrid’s midfield and be a long-term and quality replacement for Kroos.
