“We were back like we were two or three seasons ago”: Pep Guardiola

Manchester City beat Chelsea by 3-1 last night and now 5th in the table with 29 points from 15 games. They are 4 points behind the joint leaders Liverpool and Manchester United with a game in hand.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was delighted after the match with his men’s performance. The Blues have experienced a tough start to the Premier League campaign. They were beaten by Leicester City by 5-2 earlier this season and also gave away some cheap points.

But now slowly they again picking up the pace. They are now 11 games unbeaten in all competition since they lost against Tottenham Hotspurs in November by 2-0.

Pep Guardiola believed his team has found the rhythm again. After the game against Chelsea, he said, “Yeah, we played really well, unfortunately, the last goal but of course the result is fantastic, here at Stamford Bridge and winning but especially the way we played.”

“Today we were back like we were two or three seasons ago.”

“Chelsea is one of the strongest teams, we cannot deny it. They are suffering the last games, but you see the quality of the players, of the bench, it’s good. We had a plan, tried to play a certain way like we were in the past and it worked. The players were incredible, fantastic in all departments. When we defend in our box we were solid, when we have the ball. We are a team we have to play in one certain rhythm. We cannot play like other teams up and down, up and down. We have to play in our rhythm, a lot of thousand passes, passes, passes in the right moment then attack. That’s why we build, in when we won the Premier Leagues in that way with the more patient and more calm. That is a weakness a little bit for many reasons, we miss a little bit this tempo, and today we got it.”

“We don’t have the physicality of players, the quality to make actions for 40 minutes and transitions. Maybe Sterling, maybe Kevin. Not much, the other ones have to play with the ball. You can rest with the ball, create problems for the opponents and that’s what we have to do. We have to from the keeper to striker, we have to put the ball on the grass, make a thousand passes, and in the right moment try to attack them.”

“It’s the same. Same manager, same backroom staff. My assistant coach changed a little bit. But the players are the same in the ideas. Completely the same. The way we won the Premier League and four titles in one year and many many things, in this years it’s because we were like today. It doesn’t matter that the players play more here or more there, the way the tempo you have to play in the past, today we recovered it.”

Manchester City will face Manchester United in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday.
