Andy Murray Awarded Wildcard Entry For Western and Southern Open

Former world number 1 Andy Murray was awarded a wildcard entry for the Western and Southern Open. Andy Murray along with Victoria Azarenka was among the first players to receive wildcard entries for the Western and Southern Open. The Western and Southern Open will be played between August 11 and August 19 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Ohio.

Murray has won the Western and Southern Open title twice in 2008 and 2011. He also has a 31-10 record at the Western and Southern Open.

After Wimbledon 2017 he was on an 11-month break due to a hip injury and then returned in June 2018 to play at the Queen’s. He missed out on the Wimbledon 2018 as he was not at the best of his fitness.

Murray also accepted the wild card entry for the Rogers Cup in Toronto after Federer backed out from the tournament. The former number 1 after staying away from the game for long has dropped down to 838th rank in the ATP rankings.

The return of Victoria Azarenka

Victoria Azarenka will return to Mason, Ohio for the first time since the last two years. She is now ranked 101 in the women (single) rankings. Azarenka has 20 career titles to her name and 2 of these have come at Lindner Family Tennis Centre, Ohio.

She won in 2016 defeating Serena William in the finals of the Western & Southern Open.

The Western and Southern Open was first played in 1899. In 2017 Grigor Dimitrov clinched the men’s singles title while the women’s singles title was won by Garbine Muguruza.
