Veteran player Leander Paes has returned to the Indian tennis team for the upcoming Asian Games. In the singles, country’s top player Yuki Bhambri has been rested due to the US Open Grand Slam. The tournament of tennis will begin on August 19 in the Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Paes has won 8 medals in the Asian Games so far. He last won a gold medal in the 2006 Doha Games with Mahesh Bhupathi in Doubles. In the same Asian Games he won one more medal with Sania Mirza in mixed doubles.

In the singles, three specialist Ramkumar Ramanathan, Pranjesh Guneshwaran, Sumit Nangal will represent India. While the duo will be Leander Paes, Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan.

In the women category, Ankita Raina, Karman Kaur Thandi, Rituja Bhosale, Pranjala Yadavalappally, Riya Bhatia and Pradhan Thombre are selected on the basis of their ranking. Jishan Ali will be the coach of the team while the women’s coach will be Ankita Bhambri.

The selection committee of the All India Tennis Association has provided the exemption of Yuki Bhambri. The committee has asked him to stay out of the team for the US Open. The committee said that many of our players do not play at any Grand Slam singles, hence Bhambri should be supported.

There will be two days of tennis tournaments in the Asian Games but for the Bhambri in the top hundred (94), it will not be easy to re-emerge again for the US Open. The US Open is to be held from August 27; hence he has been given exemption.
