Asian Games 2018: Two medals confirmed for India in Tennis

Ankita Raina and top seeded pair of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan reached the semifinals of the 18th Asian Games tennis tournament and confirmed at least two bronze medals for India.

In the women’s section, world’s 189th ranked Raina made it to the semi-finals by defeating Hong Kong’s Eudice Chong 6-4, 6-1. The loser in the semi-finals of all five tennis events also gets a bronze medal.

Ankita, after trailing 1-4 in the first set, made a strong comeback and won the next five games in her own possession. She won this set in 54 minutes. She only took 27 minutes to win the second set.

This is the third opportunity when India will get a medal in women’s singles tennis in Asian Games. Earlier, Sania Mirza won the Silver in 2006 and Bronze in 2010.

Doubles event in Asian Games:

In men’s doubles, Rohan Bopanna and Dvij Sharan’s pair defeated Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh Chengpeng and Yang Tsung-Hua to reach in the in the semifinals. This victory will increase the morale of Rohan and Sharan. Now they will put full strength to win the gold medal. Now the duo will meet K. Uesugi and S. Shimabukuro of japan in the semifinals.

In mixed doubles, Bopanna and Raina entered the quarterfinals by defeating Hong Kong’s duo 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. In the women’s doubles, Ankita Raina and Prarthana Thombare duo had to face defeat against Kazakhstan’s duo.
