French Open: Former Champion Wawrinka is out of the tournament, Djokovic goes further

The former French Open champion Stan Wawrinka and Victoria Azarenka of Belarus were eliminated in the first round of the French Open, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year. But Novak Djokovic succeeded in winning his match in straight sets.

Last year, 2015 champion Wawrinka lost to Rafael Nadal in the finals. This year He lasted five sets against 67th ranked Spain’s Guillermo Garcia Lopez, who beat him 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.

The 33-year-old Swiss player Wawrinka was suffering from a knee injury and he had just arrived here by winning a match at Clay Court. He returned to Geneva last week for the first time in three months. This defeat means that the three-time Grand Slam champion Wawrinka will be out of top 250 ATP rankings after the tournament.

For Serbian star Novak Djokovic, there was no problem in reaching the second round. He beat Brazilian world number 13 Rogério Dutra Silva 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Twelve-time Grand Slam champion lost his serve three times and he would have to make much improvement in his game to challenge Rafael Nadal in the post-tournament stage.

Djokovic, the 20th seeded player said after the match, “It’s a good start with a victory. I did not play my best tennis. I did not play well but was successful in winning three sets.”
