Italian Open: Sharapova and Edmund qualified for Pre-quarterfinals, Muguruza is out

Russia’s star player Maria Sharapova and British star Kyle Edmund have performed well in their respective matches. Hence both qualified for the pre-quarterfinals of their respective squads of the Italy Open Tennis Tournament.

Sharapova, who had won this tournament three times, defeated Slovak Dominika Cibulková in the second round of the women’s singles. World No. 40 Sharapova beat World No. 34 Cibulkova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a match that lasted for two and a half hours.

After the match, Sharapova said, ‘I am very happy. I thought I can get many good things from this match. Competition against a player who played very well according to me and played her best game for a long time.”

Sharapova will now face World No. 24 Daria Gavrilova of Australia, who beat World No. 3 Garbiñe Muguruza 5-7, 6-2, 7-6.

This result is unexpected as Muguruza was looking in full control in the first set. But she lost her rhythm in the second set and finally lost the match as well. With this unexpected defeat, Muguruza is out of the tournament now.

Men’s Section

British star player Kyle Edmund also entered the pre-quarterfinals of this tournament. Edmund beat French player Lucas Pouille in the second round. Kyle Edmund, the 23-year-old British player, has risen above the 50th spot this year and is ranked 19th in the ATP world rankings now.

Edmund beat World No. 16 Lucas Pouille 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) in one hour and 34 minutes game in the second round of the men’s singles. In the pre-quarterfinals, Edmund will face German player Alexander Zverev.

World No. 3 Zverev is defending champion and he had won Madrid Open last week.
