The current champion Simona Halep defeated Belgium’s Alice Mertens in the second round and made a strong move to win the third consecutive title in the Madrid Open tennis tournament. Halep has won the title in 2016 and 2017.
She had to work a bit in the second set, but there was no doubt about winning ability of World No. 1 player. She won by 6-0, 6-3. Romanian player Halep will clash with Czech Republic’s Kristýna Plíšková in the final sixteen.
Earlier, Petra Kvitova had to fight for the win with Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig and finally won by 6-3, 7-6 (10/8).
In another match, local player Garbiñe Muguruza, after losing the first set, defeated Donna Vekić by 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The current Italian Open champion and fourth-seeded Elina Svitolina, however, lost to Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 6-7, (3/7) 6-4.
The men’s section in Madrid Open
In the men’s section, Juan Martin del Potro started with his clay court session victory. Del Potro, playing his first match after losing the semi-finals of Miami Open in March. He defeated Damir Džumhur of Bosnia by 6-3, 6-3. This Argentinian player will now face Dušan Lajović of Serbia, who defeated Richard Gasquet by 7-6 (7/1), 7-6 (7/1).
World number four Grigor Dimitrov had to face defeat in three sets, from Milos Raonic of Canada. Raonic won this match by 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
Earlier, South Korea’s Chung-Hyeon had to face defeat as well. He had defeated by Robin Haase of Netherlands (6-0, 6-2).
Kyle Edmund, another player who reached the Australian Open semi-final, defeated Daniil Medvedev by 6-4, 6-0. He will now face former world number one player Novak Djokovic who defeated Kei Nishikori on Monday.
