Novak Djokovic equals record of legendary Pete Sampras, also Climes to ATP World No. 3

Serbia’s legendary tennis player Novak Djokovic defeated Juan Martin del Potro to win the title of US Open for the third time. Djokovic, who played the US Open final for the eighth time, defeated Del Potro 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. He won the title in consecutive sets. Along with winning the last Grand Slam of the year Djokovic also equaled legendary Pete Sampras 14 Grand Slam titles.

31-year-old Djokovic did not play due to elbow injury in the US Open last year. Now he equaled the record of American legendsĀ Pete Sampras.

Former World No. 1 player Del Potro had reached the Grand Slam final for the second time after winning the US Open 9 years ago. It was Djokovic’s 15th win and 5th win in Grand Slams against this opponent from Argentina.

After Djokovic’s victory, 50 of the last 55 Grand Slams were won by ‘Big-4’ that includes Federer, Nadal, Djokovic or Andy Murray.

World No. 3 in ATP RankingsĀ 

Novak Djokovic after winning the US Open, finished third in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Rankings. Spain’s star Rafael Nadal and Switzerland’s legend Roger Federer are first and second respectively in the latest rankings issued today.

Djokovic reached the third position with the advantage of three places in the world ranking, while Juan Martin del Potro slipped one place and ended at fourth rank. Germany’s player Alexander Zverev also lost a place and he now slipped from fourth place to fifth place.
