Wimbledon 2018: World No. 1 Simona Halep lost to Hsieh Su-wei, Nadal is in the quarter-finals

World No. 1 and French Open 2018 champion Simona Halep became a victim of reversal in the third round of the Wimbledon tennis tournament on Saturday. She lost to Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei, while world No. 1 Rafael Nadal is now in the men’s pre-quarterfinals.

This grass court tournament is not happening good for the top-seeded women players. After the loss of Halep, the seventh-seeded Carolina Pliscova was the only top 10-seeded player left in the All England tournament.

This will also ease the path of Serena Williams to become 8th time Wimbledon champion.

The 26-year-old Hsieh, who is ranked 48th in the WTA rankings, won the match against Halep 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. She was lagging behind in the third set at a time 2-5. She made a fantastic comeback by breaking Simona’s service at match point score of 5-3.

This is the first time that Su-wei has reached the last 16 of any Grand Slam. In the pre-quarterfinals, she will be challenged by Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova.

After this unexpected victory, Hsieh said, “This is my first win against World No. 1. This is fantastic. In the last set I was lagging 2-5, but the audience increased my resolve.”

Men’s Section:

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal defeated Australia’s Alex De Minaur, in the Wimbledon’s pre-quarterfinals. The second-seeded player defeated young player De Minaur 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 in a one-on-one match. Nadal, who recently won the French Open 2018 title for the 11th time, will face J. Vesley of Czech Republic.

Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina also managed to reach the final 16 of the tournament for the first time in 5 years.
