The world number 9 player in ATP Rankings Kiki Bertens, who is the top seed in the WTA finals, made it to the semi-finals of the WTA Finals here on Friday. Bertens’ opponent Japan’s Naomi Osaka had to retire due to injury from the match and along with this she also got out of the race of semifinal match.
The competition between Osaka and Bertens at the fourth position in the world rankings lasted for 47 minutes. After lagging 3-6 in the first set, Osaka was hurt and she got out of the match.
Kiki Bertens felt sorry for Osaka
“It’s never nice to win a match like this and I hope she’s feeling better soon,” the 26-year-old match winner player said after the match.
Bertens also wished good for Osaka and said that “I will just try to keep on going. I have had some tough matches here already this week but the day in between helps for recovery.”
She further said, “I stayed solid the whole time knowing there was a lot on the line.”
“I knew it was going to be a battle and just tried to play as hard as I could.”
“To be at the last four, last tournament of the year, it’s unbelievable,” she concluded after the match statement.
After the match, Osaka also told the reporters that “I hurt my left hamstring in the first match (against Stephens).”
“It was just getting worse and worse every time I played. I couldn’t even really practice that well today,” she added.
