India’s number one singles tennis player Yuki Bhambri has been chosen the US Open instead of Asian Games. Hence the Sports Ministry has thrown him out of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). Yuki is very angry and upset about this. All India Tennis Association (AITA) is taking to Sports Ministry. AITA is trying to persuade the Ministry to re-think on its decision.
Yuki had preferred to play in the US Open instead of Asian Games 2018, after which he has been out of the TOPS list. It’s noteworthy that Indian legendary Tennis player Leander Paes replaced him in Asian games’ Indian Tennis squad.
AITA had given the permission to the country’s top singles player Yuki to withdraw his name from Asian Games the last month. AITA is thinking that it is very important to play in Grand Slam to earn ranking points. Doing so the Delhi player can get direct entry into the Tokyo Olympics.
AITA on this issue:
“We have asked the government to reconsider this decision and have asked both Yuki and Leander Paes to join the TOPS,” says AITA Secretary Hironmoy Chatterjee.
He also added that “We told him that Yuki needs to be in top 64 to get direct entry into the Tokyo Olympics, so it is important to play at the US Open as well.”
He said, ‘officials told us that when Yuki will play again in the Davis Cup, his case will be considered then.”
Playing at the US Open, Yuki will get a minimum amount of $ 50,000 (about Rs 33 lakh) for sure. If he goes ahead with the first round, this prize money will also increase. Good performance in US Open can also lead him to the direct entry in Tokyo Olympics.
