After defeating Paris Saint-Germain in their home last week, Manchester United is ready to face last season’s UEFA Champions League’s semi-finalist RB Leipzig tonight. The German side has traveled to Manchester to host Manchester United at Old Trafford.
RB Leipzig is in great form recently. They are leading the Bundesliga table with 13 points in the first 5 matches. They beat İstanbul Başakşehir F.K. in their opening game of UCL this season by 2-0. Angelino has scored a brace to secure the victory of the German side.
RB Leipzig had displayed some extra-ordinary knocks in last season’s UCL. They have done a great job under their young manager Julian Nagelsmann. They beat Tottenham Hotspurs, Atletico Madrid on their way to the semi-final last season. They lost against Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final by 2-1 in injury time.
Julian Nagelsmann was an admirer of Manchester United from childhood. He said, “I’ve never played in Old Trafford or been there. It will be a great experience. I watched a lot of games in the Theatre of Dreams and of Manchester United on television. Now to be part of the stadium will be perfect.”
“I watched nearly every game of Manchester United 10 years ago when I was a younger guy and a player.” – he added.
Manchester United’s performance in Old Trafford is not well. They lost the first two Premier Leagues game at Old Trafford against Crystal Palace and Tottenham. They had conceded 9 goals in Old Trafford in those two games before a 0-0 draw against Chelsea last weekend. Keeping that in mind RB Leipzig’s manager said, “We know that their start was not that good but, in the end, it is one of the biggest clubs in the world, a big name in European football and the Champions League.”
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was not happy with the draw against Chelsea. He and his men will surely want to bounce back tonight.
In the press conference, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given a hint of an unchanged XI who had played against Chelsea on Saturday. He said, “It’s more or less the same squad. There are a couple of doubts, as you normally have after a weekend game, a tight game as we had against Chelsea. I think we’ve more or less the same squad. It’s going to be a long season. Of course, the depth of our squad is better now.”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was criticized recently for lack of rotation in his team selection. He was questioned multiple times for not giving the chance to start to Donny Van De Beek. But Ole explains a good side of it. He said, “It’s hard to leave players out like the last game with Donny, Nemanja and Paul to start on the bench, as midfielders they are all experienced international footballers. It’s not easy but then, as I’ve said, we have so many games this season, they are all going to play a big, massive part in different periods of the season. I don’t think anyone is able to play all of them. There’s a balance when you put 11 together, it’s all-important we all work well as a team – is it three or four or two? All sorts of discussions and who is on form and who maybe needs a break. All these little things.”
Alex Telles, who made his Manchester United debut last week in Paris, has been left out of the squad against RB Leipzig.
Manchester United will surely want to change their fortune in their home by defeating RB Leipzig today and want to hold the top of the table in the group. It will be interesting to see how RB Leipzig encounters the strategy of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
