Belgium World Cup 2018 Team Guide: Strengths, Weaknesses, Tactics and Squad

Roberto Martinez will be looking to take Belgium’s golden generation all through to the title as the Red Devils go into the competition as one of the tournament’s favourites.

This is a Belgian team full of world class individuals. In goal, Thibaut Courtois has been nothing short of spectacular while Toby Alderweireld, Vincent Kompany and Jan Vertonghen have all starred for their respective teams in the Premier League.

Moving forward, Kevin de Bruyne and Eden Hazard have set the world alight with their immaculate skill and prowess and the prospect of having the two in the same team will certainly send shivers down the spines of opposition defenders.

In midfield, Martinez has a number of backup options as the likes of Mousa Dembele, Marouane Fellaini and Leander Dendoncker will all provide something completely different from the other two players and could be picked over Axel Witsel. The chances of that happening are, however, pretty bleak.

The real weakness in this Belgium squad is the lack of quality out and out full-backs. Martinez has deployed a wing-backs system for the Red Devils, but only Thomas Meunier on the right is suited to play that role.

The likes of Yannick Carrassco and Naccer Chadli have been tried and tested on the left, but none of them quite have the defensive ability of a full-back and could prove to be a massive liability.

Martinez is hell-bent on playing a back three, but could have a different system in mind for the bigger games. He is expected to play a 3-4-3 with Eden Hazard and Dries Mertens occupying the two attacking positions behind Romelu Lukaku, but this system could very well change into a 3-5-2 with Hazard playing as a number 10 behind the two.

Another option for Martinez is the rather unorthodox 3-5-1-1. This could ensure midfield stability while freeing up the likes of Kevin de Bruyne and Hazard to serve as creative outlets for Lukaku.
