Manchester United this season has faced multiple problems due to defensive issues, the poor form of some key players, injury issues. Fred is criticized as ‘52 Million Flop’ and Scott McTominay is termed as ‘not so good enough’ by the rivals and media.
But the presence of the midfield duo seems to generate stability in the Manchester United team. Manchester United has some real quality in forward line with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood, Edinson Cavani in the team. United has Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, and Donny Van De Beek to supply the ball to them from the midfield. But United has faced some problems in their defensive section in recent times. The lack of quality in the defensive midfield position causes Manchester United multiple problems.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has used Scott McTominay and Fred as a double pivot in the midfield to cover up the defense and he has found that successful most of the time as well.
Last season when Manchester United faced some injury issues McTominay and Fred stepped up and put up some excellent performances back to back and confirmed their position in the first team. But there was a dip in the form again after football has resumed in June. They are slowly getting back to their very best again.
Manchester United looked solid when the pair is in the team. They have put some noticeable performance against Paris Saint Germain in UEFA Champions League and Everton in Premier League.
After the 3-1 victory against in-form Everton at Goodison Park Fred and McTominay has got some praise from their manager. After the match, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said, “Scott and Fred have done brilliantly together.”
“They’re a great partnership. Of course, they didn’t start during the week. Scott played 45 minutes in Turkey but you can see they have fresh legs.”
“With Bruno’s goals, Scott and Fred with that energy and in that engine room are always key for us so our creative players can go on, create chances, show their magic.”
The duo is excellent to calm things down and soak all the attacks of the opposition. They win the ball in midfield and it helps the attackers to build on the momentum.
Some stats suggest the performance of Manchester United is better when the duo starts together. It will surely give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a point to think about in upcoming games.
