Manchester United recently confirmed the signing of Ivorian international Amad Diallo from Atalanta. Amad will wear the number 19 shirt at Old Trafford previously worn by Marcus Rashford in the early days of his career.
After long speculation since the summer, Manchester United finally completed the deal last week. The 18 years old is a highly rated emerging talent. Atalanta wanted him on loan till the next summer but Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer refused to let him go on the loan.
Manchester United is lucky to land him. But Juventus was also in the race and had a great chance to sign him.
When Amad was 13, he joined the Italian club Boca Barco. His performance got the eyes of the scouts. Juventus called him in their trials 3 times. But he failed to please the Juventus coaches in every attempt.
Boca Barco president Enzo Guerri said in an interview, “Diallo started out in our youth team, from 2014 to 2015, when he was 12 to 13 years old, and even then you could tell he had something more than the other.”
“Atalanta certainly weren’t the only club to set their sights on him. There was a queue of scouts coming to view him from all over Italy.”
“Amad had three trials in Turin with Juve, just as he was called in by Reggiana, Sassuolo, Empoli, Roma, and of course Atalanta.”
“I remember a Roma scout came to view him, and after five minutes when Diallo chested down the ball to continue his run, the scout turned around and left. I asked him what was going on and he replied: ‘Only potential champions do that at the age of 12. Seeing him in this game won’t help, he has to train with our kids at Roma.’
“However, from the first day, Atalanta had him training with those a year older than him. Amad was always destined for greatness.”
“He had trials with everyone until he found the right club for the big step in his career. Atalanta is something of an exception in Italian football, as very few clubs here are prepared to put their faith in young players.”
Atalanta captain Papu Gomez already rated the youngster as good as Lionel Messi. United fans are already optimistic with their new addition. Everyone is waiting to see the youngster wearing the Red jersey with a ball in his feet at Old Trafford.
